Hygiene and Periodontal Dentistry

We are passionate about preventative care and want to empower you to live your best life with a healthier smile. Through ongoing education, care and consultation we will work together to deliver you an effective home care routine, and regular maintenance appointments, to help keep your teeth and gums healthy and your breath fresh

Maintaining good oral hygiene at home is straight forward, and our friendly team can assess your teeth and develop a personalised hygiene routine for you to take home. Click through to read more about the oral hygiene treatments and services we offer.

Your hygiene appointment will involve a thorough clean from our friendly and attentive dental hygienists. Your gums will be checked, with a focus on plaque, calculus (hardened plaque or tartar) and the removal of surface staining. You will then be checked for gingivitis or gum disease, and screened for other diseases such as oral cancer. We will work with you to show you the most effective brushing and oral care routine. At your regular visit (6 – 12 month visits), the appointment is also combined with a dental exam, which includes a complete check-up of your teeth and restorations, with the aim of identifying concerns before they evolve. Radiographs (X-Rays) may be requited at this visit, but will be discussed with you beforehand.

Our team works with you to provide as much information as you need on a wide range of hygiene topics. These include ongoing maintenance, gum disease, fresh breath and oral cancer screening.

Hygiene Maintenance

To maintain your healthy smile, we recommend regular appointments with our hygiene team to ensure we can identify any arising concerns. Scaling, polishing and a thorough analysis of hard and soft tissue, all help determine the health of your gums and teeth.

So why a professional clean? Our hygienists have been specially trained to care for the health of your teeth and gums. During your appointment, you may require tartar removal. Tartar is simply plaque that has hardened. This is a very important step in keeping your teeth healthy, as failure to remove tartar may ultimately impact your gum health. The best way to remove tartar is with professional care, and that is where we can help. In addition to this service, your dental hygienist will also examine your mouth to identify any concerns. For example, they may measure the gum pockets with a special tool. A measurement of 1-3mm is normal, while 4mm will likely require some attention and care. A measurement of 5mm indicates that you may be at risk for gum disease and further deep cleaning may be suggested.

We adopt a holistic approach to your maintenance appointment, and combined with our examination appointments, you will experience a wide range of analysis, including that of your head, neck and jaw muscles.

Remember, at Freedom Dental our dental hygienists are all extremely gentle. You can always have them stop during your treatment for maximum comfort. We also cater for sensitive patients with numbing gel options available.
